MIND MAPPING METHOD TO IMPROVE ORAL PRESENTATION ABILITIES OF STUDENTS ENGLISH LANGUAGE EDUCATION

BACKGROUND

In learning English, a student is required to be able to use it in communicating, both productively and receptively. There are four language skills that every English student must master: Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. In the teaching plan for the Speaking III course, the purpose of speaking learning is so that students of the English language education study program are able to make oral presentations using English well. Based on the researcher's experience, students often experience difficulties in using English, especially when presenting a particular topic. They tend to memorize the contents of their presentation. So, their way of speaking is very unnatural and not fluent. In fact, they could no longer focus on what was being said because they were busy remembering the next word. This greatly affected the atmosphere of the presentation so that it became boring and other students lost their motivation to be active. Related to this problem, lecturers or language teachers as a key factor in the learning process must be able to motivate their students to improve their presentation skills. In this case, the lecturer and teacher should be able to find effective methods so that their students are stimulated to be able to make good oral presentations.

THEORY

Theoretically, the results of this study support the Mind-Mapping theory in improving students' oral presentation skills. This research is also expected to provide practical contributions for both lecturers and teachers. They can apply it as a method in solving similar problems in the speaking class. For students, the results of this study are expected to be useful for those who still have difficulty in oral presentations using English.

RESEARCH METHODS

Using Mind-Mapping and the research design chosen was classroom action research.

SAMPLE

Students of the English Education study program who are taking the Speaking III course are class III-A with ten research subjects who have very poor abilities in the Speaking class.

RESEARCH STEPS

1. First meeting: Students present a topic they like

2. Second meeting: The lecturer explains to students what and how to use mind mapping in oral presentations.

3. Third meeting: Students make presentations using the mind mapping method. The mind mapping used was designed by the students themselves according to the topic of their oral presentation.

4. Fourth meeting: Students make presentations using mmindmapping method. The mind mapping used was designed by the students themselves according to the topic of their oral presentation. In addition, students filled out a questionnaire to find out their opinion on the mind mapping method used.

RESULT

The result is that students can smoothly present their topics in an orderly and systematic manner and students can save time preparing their presentations in front of the class. With Mind Mapping, all ideas can be presented with a picture or one keyword so that students do not need a long time to design these ideas into a Mind Map.

CONCLUSION

The objectives achieved in this study were to improve speaking skills, especially in oral presentations in the speaking course by using the mind mapping method for the third semester students of the English education study program at the University of Kanjuruhan Malang and to describe students' opinions on the application of the MindMapping method. The result is that students can smoothly present their topics in an orderly and systematic manner and students can save time preparing their presentations in front of the class.

SUGGESTION

(1) For lecturers, speaking who have problems in their class is fora applythe Mind-Mapping method developed in this study as one of the methods in oral presentation. Students must be introduced regardingunderstanding, benefits to how to make the right Mind-Mapping.

(2) For other researchers, to do a study on Mind-Mapping in the eyea another lecture so that it will further prove the effectiveness of Mind-Maping in variouscourses.

ADVANTAGES

-The explanation is carried out clearly from the introduction to the conclusion

-Lightweight journal with many positive values.

-Use appropriate grammar

DEFICIENCY

Lack of theoretical foundations to strengthen existing research results or journals
