Modern & Traditional Dance

        

The Definition of Dance in general is a rhythmic gesture performed at a certain place and time for social purposes, expressing feelings, intentions and thoughts. Sounds called dance accompaniment music govern the movements of the dancer and reinforce the meaning to be conveyed.

The differences between traditional and modern dance are: Traditional dance is a dance that is usually a characteristic of an area and has been introduced from generation to generation, and is usually not added by new movements. Meanwhile, Modern Dance is a collaboration or a mixture of traditional dance with new movements.


Modern Dance

        The art of dance in its development has changed according to the changes of modern times. The development of dance has been influenced by extraordinary foreign cultures. Where is often referred to as modern culture, so that the term Modern Dance appears. 

Modern dance is a form of dance that was formed and developed since the early 20th century. Where as a form of reaction to the ballet style that was booming at that time and was considered limited, rigid, and artistic.




Types of Modern Dance:
1. Robot Dance: is an illusion of a dance style that tries to fake the way of robot dancing.
2. Street dance:  is a general term used to describe a developing dance role model. This dance includes a style that is not confined by one particular form and is free to move and express itself to the rhythm of the music.
3. Shuffel Dance: the basic movements of this dance are the heels and toes that move fast in a style that is suitable for a wide variety of electronic music.
4. Hip-hop dance: refers to a style of street dance that is primarily performed for hip-hop music


Characteristics of Modern Dance:

In modern or contemporary dance, there are several characteristics that you should know:
 
1. Their movements tend to oppose the rules generally accepted in traditional dances that have been established in society.

2. The expressions raised are personal expressions, not expressions of a particular community or ethnicity, and are not collective in nature.

3. The source of the movement may be free, but in accordance with the dance theme, whether it comes from traditional dance or a livelihood in a dance studio.

4. Rhythm patterns, both music and motion, are not always rhythmic and melodic, instead they are often separated from melodic and rhythmic.

5. The script or story concept expressed through the dance work must relate to contemporary human issues.

6. Music and dance are not united in a single rhythmic pattern, but are integrated into the atmosphere. Music is part of a dance story or a concept made.

7. The duration or time of the show if repeated is always not constant, so are the dancer's expression, form of motion and the pressure or accent is not constant,

8. It is difficult to repeat the show to be exactly the same, and it cannot be maintained for a long time.


Traditional Dance



Traditional Dance is a dance that comes from the community of an area that has been hereditary and has become the culture of the local community.

Characteristics of traditional dance:
-Developed hereditary.
-Accompanied by using traditional music.
-Developing among the common people / common people. Etc.
 
Traditional dance is divided into 3 types of dance, namely:
1. Classical Dance: is one type of traditional dance that was born and developed in the palace and has existed since feudal times. Classical dance was passed down from generation to generation in the aristocracy

2. Folk dance: is one type of traditional dance that was born and developed from the culture of the local community and has existed since primitive times. Folk dance has been passed down from generation to generation until now. Folk dance in general has several characteristics, among others, it is still thick with social nuances, referring to the cultural customs and habits of the local community, and has simple movements, make-up, and costumes.

3. New Creation Dance: is a classical dance that has been arranged and developed according to the times, but there are still values ​​contained in the dance.

-Baluse dance from North Sumatra
-Dari Piring from West Sumatra
-Eat Betel Dance from Riau
-Jaipong dance from West Java
